ANN0UNCEMENTS

Hello United Emmaus community.

During this pandemic and time of social distancing, we had to cancel our spring walks and shift those teams and pilgrims to the fall. As Covid cases are reportedly on the rise, new mandates are being discussed and the thoughts of how changes to the walk due to social distancing will impact the pilgrim’s Emmaus experience, the United Emmaus Board of Directors has voted to postpone the fall walks until the spring of 2021.

This may be a disappointment to some and a huge relief to others. We just want to make sure we have the “best walk ever” for each of these groups. Hopefully by the spring, hugs and closeness will no longer be frowned upon and the smiles on faces won’t only be seen in the eyes or appliqued on a mask.

Please be in prayer for these teams and pilgrims in their time of waiting. This also gives added time to find your own pilgrim. We have eight men and eight women thus far. The men’s walk is, God willing, April 15th through the 18th and the women’s walk is April 22nd through the 25th. We will be moving back to Appalachian Christian Camp in Unicoi. The registrars have been contacting the 2020 pilgrims and sponsors with updates.

In my letter to the teams I noted that while not being able to fulfill their walk obligations at this time, I encouraged them to keep on advancing the word of God in works and deed. There are so many places we can be furthering His Kingdom. We can look in our circle of friends, family and church, our community and anywhere the Holy Spirit leads. I ask each of our community to do the same. Know if He calls you, He will equip you.

We will not be having a gathering in August due to continued technical problems but are working to have them corrected by September.  As of now it is scheduled for Word Fellowship in Gray at 6:30 on Saturday September 19th. We have been having a wonderful time of praise and worship and great Fourth Day speakers. Fred Lewis will be bringing our talk.

To join the Facebook page, go to our United Emmaus & Chrysalis Community Facebook page and ask to join. You can watch without joining but won’t be able to see names of members.

With social distancing, the sanctuary will be able to accommodate 30 to 50 people. Word has updated their Covid policy and that can be found on their web page or our Facebook page.
If you are watching on-line, have your communion elements ready as we will observe Holy Communion.

The new by-laws are now in effect and can be found on our website.

Chrysalis has been a huge part of our community for many years. For the past few years they have been more autonomous and had their own building steering committee. Also, in recent years, it has been a struggle to have enough young people to have a flight or journey to the point of combining them. Most recently there weren’t even enough to do that. Add to that the lack of volunteers and you get a very disheartened group of people. This quote is from a letter their committee sent to our board. “The primary issue is an absence of leaders (or even potential leaders) in the existing Chrysalis community. Not having weekends since 2018 has contributed to this, but the pool was unfortunately shallow even prior.”

It is a sad reality that the youth of today have been busied with jobs and activities to the point of having no time for anything else. A positive is that many churches have activities and groups that do tend to their spiritual needs.

Due to all the above reasons, the building steering committee came to the difficult decision of disbanding as a board and temporarily suspending the weekends geared towards the college-aged and high school aged youth. They will revisit in three years. In the interim we can support those youth activities in our churches and ask those 18 years old and older to an Emmaus Walk. There they can be mentored by the “seasoned” ones around them.

Please don’t think the Chrysalis steering committee came to this decision without months of trying to revive this ministry. I sat in as their Emmaus board representative and the ones that were faithful in coming to their meetings did everything they could to keep it afloat. In their words, “These decisions were not made lightly. This community and committee has been a labor of love for each one of us in numerous ways, for numerous years. We are saddened by the thought of our community not continuing, but we also recognize that God can do beautiful things through rest and renewal. We look forward to the time when Chrysalis is once again thriving. Until then, we look forward to what God will do in the waiting.”

Thanks to all who have served on this committee and on flights and journeys. Be blessed!

We are preparing our list of nominees for the United Emmaus Board of Directors Class of 2023. Any member of the Community may nominate a person or persons for potential Board membership. Such nominations must be presented no later than August 31. Nominations may be made in writing, submitted to any Board member, or by emailing the same to the Board secretary using the community website address of info.unitedemmaus@yahoo.com.

Live with peace in your souls as this is just a season and God will be with His people. We have seen recently more times than we can count the scripture that says, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will heal their land.” Pray to God, seek the Holy Spirit and turn to Jesus in all things. Be blessed!

De Colores,
